Governor Doubles Down on the Cal Earned Income Tax Credit Putting $1 Billion Back in the Pockets of Hard Working Californians

January 10, 2019 —  CalEITC4Me Founder, Joe Sanberg and President, Josh Fryday, issued the following statement today in response to the Governor’s budget that more than doubles the California Earned Income Tax Credit (Cal EITC).  In 2015, Joe Sanberg helped create the Cal EITC and established CalEITC4Me, the statewide outreach program that has helped two million Californians receive $4 billion in state and federal tax credits.  CalEITC4Me has successfully led efforts to greatly expand the program in in 2017 and 2018.

“Out of the gate, Governor Newsom is boldly doubling down on one of the best tools to fight poverty and strengthen California’s economy — the California Earned Income Tax Credit (Cal EITC).  His budget more than doubles the successful initiative we helped establish by putting unprecedented $1 billion back into the pockets of working families.

We are fired up to work with the Governor and the Legislature to make this plan a reality — so that millions more families can afford life’s basic needs  housing, healthcare, transportation and education.  Thanks to advocacy efforts we’ve spearheaded, the Legislature has expanded the program so that two million Californians have received $4 billion in state and federal tax credits.  This has benefitted the entire state:  Cal EITC has a strong multiplier effect in low-income communities throughout the state, providing a significant boost to local businesses.

We have the tools to end poverty — under the Governor’s strong leadership and continued support from the Legislature, we can make progress on this critically important mission.”
