The California Earned Income Tax Credit is a cash-back tax credit that puts money back in the pockets of California’s working families and individuals, now including anyone over the age of 18!
For the first time this year, more than 600,000 young people are expected to qualify for the Cal EITC. However, most young people are likely unaware of the refund and may not be planning to file an income tax return, which is necessary to receive the credit. Young workers with families could receive up to $2,879. Individuals making $16,750 or less could receive up to $232.
The amount of your cash back tax credit depends on a few things:
- Size of your family
- Dependent status
If you earned $24,950 or less in 2018 and are a Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident, you may qualify for the Cal EITC. If you earned $53,930 or less in 2018, you may qualify for the Federal EITC.
Young adult workers who qualify for the Cal EITC are also likely eligible for CalFresh food assistance and other public benefits.
